POSITION: Lead Intern/Intern, Campground Accessibility Position Type: Seasonal (10 weeks or 14 weeks) LOCATION(s): Campgrounds across Oregon " Orientation and training in Eugene, OR (10 Week & 14 Week Internships) Campgrounds across Washington " Orientation and training in Eugene, OR (10 Week Internships) COMPENSATION: Lead Interns receive a living allowance of $4,500 (10 Week) or $6,300 (14 Week) prorated through their term of service. Interns receive a living allowance of $2,970 (10 Week) or $4,158 (14 Week) prorated through their term of service. Lead Interns and Interns will also earn a $1,538 (10 Week) or $2,215 (14 Week) AmeriCorps Education Award upon the successful completion of the program. Food is included. To achieve this, NYC provides a variety of outdoors, conservation-specific programs throughout the Northwest that emphasize leadership, growth and personal success. NYC partners with agencies like the U.S. Forest Service; National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management, and local land managers to provide strenuous field-based work projects. NYCs programs serve over 900 youth and young adults annually, with programs operating in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and California. NYC engages youth and young adults from all walks of life and provides a multifaceted experience that helps propel them into future opportunities and careers. Hard and soft skills are taught and reinforced throughout the members term through a formal practical trainings and mentorship of partners and NYC staff. NYC strives to provide program participants the skills and competencies needed to succeed in a wide variety of professional environments and life circumstances. Position Description: The Campground Accessibility Internship (CAI) program is an innovative AmeriCorps program designed to provide hands on training and experience to those interested in pursuing employment with conservation corps, land and water resource management agencies, and other outdoor careers. The CAI Interns work in teams of three conducting accessibility and access surveys on US Forest Service campgrounds and recreation facilities. Participants will develop technical skills in Survey 1,2,3 software platform, data collection, and accessibility analysis. Participants will also gain experience and skills needed to be successful in the outdoor industry. CAI participants spend ten weeks camping, working, and travelling together as a three person team. You can expect to be doing survey and data collection at hundreds of campsites, in any kind of weather, with significant interaction with FS campground users. There will be significant travel involved in this Internship. Each day, you will return to camp after work and participate in group duties, including meal prep, water collection and treatment, and tool maintenance, followed by a family style dinner. Evenings will be spent on various educational and recreational activities; including formal lessons taught by team members, group discussions, and stargazing around the campfire. Training/Professional Development: All CAI Lead Interns will be provided a 5 day comprehensive training which may cover the following topics: Use of Data collection tools Use of Survey 1,2,3 platform NYC Leadership Philosophy Risk Management and Safety Procedures Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Behavior Management Time Management Driver Training Tool Use and Maintenance Anaphylaxis training Lead Intern Duties and Responsibilities: Leadership and Mentorship " Lead Interns manage, supervise, and participate in all aspects of team service projects. They work cooperatively with two Interns to delegate responsibilities, maintain team discipline, resolve conflicts, and establish/maintain team morale. Leader Interns provide formal and informal feedback to team members with specific attention to work productivity and quality, teamwork, and leadership. Safety and Risk Management - Oversee the physical and emotional safety of Interns at all times. Safety is the number one priority in everything we do, including work, education, and recreation. This includes not only the physical safety of the team, but their mental and emotional safety as well. Lead Interns will be responsible for transporting the team and equipment, to and from the worksite daily, safely in NYCs fleet vehicles. Project Management & Implementation " Lead Interns are responsible for safely completing data collection and survey work to high standards by training, working with, and supervising two other Interns. They will serve as the principal liaison with project partners and members of the local community. The Lead Interns principal role, however, will be to manage and motivate their team. In the field, they will provide direction to their team with specific attention to safe work practices, proper equipment use, work quality, and productivity. Lead Interns are mentors and role models and set the pace and tone of the project site. The CAI is a high priority conservation projects for the US Forest Service. Education " Lead Interns facilitate education lessons based on NYCs education curriculum (SEED), which incorporates environmental education, life skills development, nutrition and health, and job readiness. Lead Interns track participation and progress throughout the program. Lead Interns facilitate and track Individual Development Plans created by each member to foster self-improvement and reflection as the program progresses. Intern Duties and Responsibilities: Work Project Participation " Interns will be part of a three person team led by a Lead Intern. Interns are responsible for the safe completion of data collection projects in a timely manner to predetermined specifications. They work closely with other Interns, paying specific attention to safe work practices, proper tool use, work quality and efficiency. The CAI is a high priority conservation projects for the US Forest Service. Development & Education: - Interns participate in educational group discussions at least two times a week. An Individual Development Plan will be created by each member to foster self-improvement and reflection as the program progresses. Lead Intern Required Qualifications: At least 21 years old Current Wilderness First Aid or higher and CPR certification Current Drivers License Clean driving record for the past three years (Drivers License Background Check required) Ability to pass criminal history background check Recreational/professional outdoor experience Excellent organization and time management skills Willingness and ability to frequently drive an NYC vehicle Ability to work collaboratively and promote teamwork Good judgment and decision-making skills Sense of humor, spirit of adventure, and desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others and the environment Experience/desire in working with diverse populations Intern Required Qualifications: 20"24 years old High School Diploma, GED Ability to lift 50 lbs, hike several miles, and be on feet for 8-10 hours per day Positive mental attitude, flexibility and commitment to success Excellent judgment Ability to listen, give and take feedback, and learn constantly Desire to go the extra mile to make a positive impact on oneself, others and the environment Ability to pass a criminal history background check Unemployed for one month prior to program start and qualifies for federal assistance (SNAP, TANF, OHP, etc) Hours: During the 10-week or 14-week program, teams work a variable schedule. Camping will be required; some camping equipment is provided such as a full kitchen. Interns are expected to bring their own tent and sleeping bag. Members must complete a minimum of 450 hours of service (10 Week) or 675 hours of service (14 Week), averaging 40-45 hours a week - including service, training, education, and travel time.
