Job Summary:
The Patient Registration Specialist is responsible for receiving incoming calls in a prompt, courteous and professional manner, greeting and assisting visitors, updating patient registration account and verifying insurance benefit eligibility. Acts as a clinical liaison with physician's practices interacting with pre-visit services.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Welcomes and greets patients and visitors in a polite, prompt, and helpful manner
  • Performs proper intake of patient information during every visit and phone call
  • Verifies insurance benefits and explains financial requirements to patients and/or responsible parties and collects copays as required
  • Facilitates patient flow and communicates delays with patients and clinical staff
  • Promptly and professionally answers a multiline phone system. Routes calls appropriately, offering voicemail or redirection of calls as needed
  • Maintains patient account information keeping it up to date
  • Schedules follow up appointments and collaborates with nursing staff to accommodate scheduling priorities
  • Maintains appointment and order workload
  • Sends outgoing referrals to regional service providers
  • Communicates appropriately with patients, co-workers, supervisors, and visitors
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

    High school diploma or equivalent

    Education/Certification/Licensing Requirements:
    - Completion of Medical Terminology coursework, preferred;
    - Knowledge of insurance processes and regulations preferred
    - Bilingual English/Spanish, a plus

    - One year of scheduling experience in a healthcare setting, preferred
    - Knowledge of medical terminology, insurance regulations, confidentiality regulations and best practices
    - Knowledge of administrative processes, procedures, claims processing, and healthcare documentation
    - Knowledge of patient care delivery systems and clinical practices

    Performance Requirements:
    - Must possess an ability to work in a team environment
    - Ability to exercise a high degree of diplomacy and tact while multi-tasking, organizing and scheduling patients
    - Excellent customer service skills
    - Prompt and professional

    Additional Abilities & Skills:
    - Ability to work well under pressure with minimal supervision
    - Strong organizational skills with an ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
    - Adheres to confidentiality, state, federal and HIPAA laws and guidelines with regard to patient records

    Equipment Operated:
    Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.

    Work Environment:
    Well-lighted medical office. Exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions related to clinic setting. Work may be stressful due to a busy office.

    Mental/Physical Requirements:
    Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with office work involving sitting approximately 90% of the day with occasional standing, walking, reaching and lifting.
